Catalonia 1840 6 cuartos
This specimen was lot 75691 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 6 Quartos, 1840. Barcelona Mint. Isabel II. NGC MS-65 Brown. The sole finest known example in the NGC census with no Red Brown or Red coins yet encapsulated, this spectacular Gem has much to offer. Bright hazel surfaces are fresh and for the most part sans carbon sport or nicks, the rims glowing with a hint of mint red. The strike is exceedingly well executed and complete, bringing out all detail to its fullest. A truly outstanding offering for the type that will garner high bids." This copper coin was issued from Barcelona for use there and in Catalonia. It was struck 1836-48 and accompanied by a copper three quartos. In the local currency, six quartos = 1/20 peso. This coin is not common but priced rather low in the SCWC. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848.
