This specimen was lot 23 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 8 escudos, 1681/0/79 S, very rare (unlisted), NGC MS 61. Rustic beauty with extremely bold full S•S to left of full but off-center shield, good full cross with 100% full 81 of date (a bit messy from the under-digits 79), with much red-purple toning on fields, missing in Calicó and an important coin for the 8-escudos specialist." The date is so crudely recut that it could easily be 1682/79 rather than 1681/79 as stated by the auctioneers. The SCWC lists KM-168.2 (date left of quadrilobe) for 1667-70, 1673-75, 1686-92 and 1698-99 and KM 61.2 (date above quadrilobe) is listed for 1666-70, 1673-80, 1683-94 and 1698-99. The auctioneers state this example is KM 168.2 but we vote for KM 61.2. Both are rare.
