Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1421

This specimen was lot 1421 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 750 € (about US$971 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1681. Carlos II. Madrid. (M). 4 reales. With inescutcheon of Portugal. Cob type (macuquino) not listed neither in Calicó nor in Pellicer. Cleaned. Very rare. MBC- [about very fine]." The SCWC lists cob four reales from Madrid for 1689-90 and 1693. Cob four reales are also reported from Seville (KM 36.2) for this decade. We also note cob one reales (KM 23.2) and two reales (KM 31) from Madrid in 1681, also quite scarce.
