Valencia 1681 dieciocheno
The first specimen was lot 74621 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Valencia. 18 Dineros (Dieciocheno - Real), 1681. Valencia Mint. Charles II. PCGS MS-63. A delightful hammered issue emanating from the Kingdom of Valencia, an entity that was simply dissolved and fully merged with that of the King of Spain in 1714. Highly brilliant and blazing, with most central details quite easily discerned. From the David Sterling Collection." The second specimen was lot 2692 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 200 € (about US$259 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "1681. Carlos II. Valencia. 1 divuité. Escasa. MBC- [scarce, about very fine]." Cayón lists this date in round ("redonda") and cob ("recortada") formats, with the round format being rare. This type was struck intermittently until 1699.
