Aureo sale 242, lot 144

The specimen shown was lot 144 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 17,000 € (about US$26,394 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlos II (1665-1700). 1687/3. Segovia. BR. 8 escudos. (Charles II (1665-1700), eight escudos of 1687, Segovia mint. Altho Calicó indicates "without the shield of Portugal, this is perceptible beneath the arms of Castille-Leon and Catalonia. Beautiful yellow color, tiny nicks, very rare, extremely fine. The assayer "BR" (Bernardo de Pedrera y Negrete) worked in Segovia and later in Seville. From there he returned to Segovia after finishing work in Madrid. He minted for three kings, Philip IV, Charles II and Philip V, from 1651 to least 1703. This is the last "onza" struck under the Hapsburgs.)"

This eight escudos was struck 1682-88 at Segovia, Spain. All the dates are expensive. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.47 g, 0.917 fine gold, .809 troy oz ASW.
