Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 213

This specimen was lot 213 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 9,500 € (about US$12,410 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1680/74. Carlos II. Seville. S. 8 escudos. With inescutcheon of Portugal. Very rare. MBC [very fine]." This gold cob was struck at Seville intermittently 1666-99. Confusingly, it is listed in the SCWC as KM 61.2 (1680/78-S M) and KM 168.2. The date is heavily and crudely reworked, which is not mentioned in Cayón. This specimen was lot 9 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $16,200.
