Künker sale 294, lot 3281

This specimen was lot 3281 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €9,000 (about US$12,130 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPANIEN, KÖNIGREICH, Carlos II. 1665-1700. 4 Escudos 1677/6, Barcelona. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 55. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Spain, Charles II, 1665-1700, four escudos of 1677/6, Barcelona mint, in NGC AU-55 holder. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This date is not listed in the SCWC or Cayón; we presume it is rare. The type was struck 1676-84, 1697-99. The Segovia was already producing milled four escudos (KM 185.2).

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .404 troy oz ASW.
