Spain 1700-S M 4 escudos
The specimen shown was lot 140 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, Spain, March 2012), where it sold for 10,000 € (about US$15,526 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos II (1665-1700). 1700. Sevilla. M. 4 escudos. Bellísima. Pleno brillo original. Muy rara así. S/C-. (Charles II (1665-1700), four escudos of 1700, Seville mint. Gorgeous, full mint luster, very rare thus, about uncirculated.)"
This four escudos was struck 1699-1700 at Seville. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .404 troy oz ASW.
