Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 255

The first specimen shown was lot 178 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, Spain, March 2012), where it sold for 2,700 € (about US$4,192 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

Felipe V (1700-1746). 1701. Sevilla. M. 8 escudos. Tipo Cruz. Sin escusón de los Borbones. Valor, ceca y ensayador en anverso. La E de DEI rectificada sobre una G. Leves golpecitos. Preciosa pátina. Rara. MBC+. (Philip V (1700-46), eight escudos of 1701, Seville mint, cross type without the shield of Portugal. Value, mint and assayer on obverse; the E of DEI punched over a G. Light nicks, nice patina, rare, choice extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 255 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 6,250 € (about US$8,164 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "1701. Felipe V. Seville. M. 8 escudos. "Cross" type. Coat of arms of the Bourbons. M-8/8-S. Value, mint and assayer on reverse. Rare. EBC- [about extremely fine]." This eight escudos was struck 1701 only at Seville. The regular issue of 1701-19 moved the denomination and assayer's initials to the reverse. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century.

Specification: 27.47 g, 0.917 fine gold, .809 troy oz ASW. The second specimen is 26.88 g.
