Spain 1620-SD D 8 reales
This specimen was lot 23079 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $376. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 8 Reales, (1)620-SD. Seville Mint. Philip III (1598-1621). CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE. Very nice example with choice surfaces. The shield is nearly complete and has a bold denomination to right. The mint mark and assayer's mark are faint but discernible upon close inspection. On the reverse the cross, lions and one castle are quite bold and detailed. The date is also present with three clear digits. Lightly toned with much nice luster and not just in the most protected areas but even in some of the more open spaces." This cob was issued from Seville 1611-21. Similar cobs were produced at Madrid, Valladolid, Toledo and Segovia. Segovia also issued milled 8 reales.
