Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72255

This specimen was lot 72255 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 8 Reales, 1622-S D. Seville Mint. Philip IV. PCGS EF-40. Fairly irregular with regard to its flan, but nevertheless presenting enough of the digits to determine the date--a key aspect in these crude types." This type is listed for 1622-38 and 1641-63. Similar cobs were struck at Toledo and Madrid.
