Spain 1620-S G escudo
This specimen was lot 17 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 1 escudo, 1620, assayer not visible, rare. Full and clear date at top of great full cross, full but off-center shield with bold denomination I inside king's name (that side crude from die-rust), overall AU- or so, reportedly found off the east coast of Florida (Sebastian) in the 1980s." The early hammered one escudos of Spain are all rare and the SCWC catalog numbers are confusing. For the one escudo, we note KM 48.1 (Seville mint, listed for 1610-11 and 1617-18) and KM 48.2 (Segovia mint, 1615 only); for the two escudos, we see KM 48.1 (Granada mint), KM 48.2 (Madrid mint) and KM 48.3 (Seville mint). The 1620-S two escudos has assayer G so we assume assayer G is intended here although assayer R was also active at this time.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.43 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.35 grams.
