Sincona sale 66, lot 1194

This specimen was lot 1194 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 13,000 CHF (about US$17,115 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum. Friedrich August III. (I.), 1763-1827. 2 Taler 1765, Dresden. Fleisstaler. Prämie für Künstler und Fabrikanten. Büste rechts mit langem, im Nacken durch Schleife gebundenem Haar. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen zwischen Lorbeerzweigen, zu den Seiten Umschrift: ZUR BELOHNUNG - DES FLEISSES. Sehr selten. Gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III, 1763-1827, double thaler of 1765, Dresden mint. Prize for the art and crafts. Bust right with long hair; reverse: crowned arms in a wreath. Very rare, Good extremely fine.)"

This specimen realized double the already quite high catalog value. Saxony would not issue double thalers on a regular basis until the 1840's, by which time the coin was substantially smaller.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 56.12 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 55.98 g.
