Saxony 1765-EDC thaler Dav-2683
This specimen was lot 40564 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $4,406. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1765-EDC. NGC MS-66. Friedrich Wilhelm III (1763-1827). Beautifully lustrous with incredible detail. A sharply struck superb gem. From the Demarete Collection." Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector Friedrich August II's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. This thaler was issued the year after the old man died; after a brief reign of Friedrich Christian, Friedrich August III ascended to the electorate under the regency of Xavier (1763-68). This type is not listed in the SCWC for 1765; other, more common thalers exist for the year (Dav-2678, Dav-2679, Dav-2682, Dav-2685, Dav-2686).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
