Künker sale 386, lot 5417

This specimen was lot 5417 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Xaver, 1763-1768. Konv.-Taler 1765, Dresden. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (electorate of Saxony, Xavier, 1763-68, convention thaler of 1765, Dresden mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector Friedrich August II's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. This thaler was issued the year after the old man died; after a brief reign of Friedrich Christian, Friedrich August III ascended to the electorate under the regency of Xavier (1763-68), who issued this type 1764-68.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.95 g.
