Saxe-Altenburg 1901-A 2 mark
This specimen was lot 4360 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €320 (about US$431 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REICHSSILBERMÜNZEN, SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, Ernst, 1853-1908. 2 Mark 1901. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (unified silver coinage, duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Ernest, 1853-1908, two mark of 1901. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
Altho most commemoratives were saved in sufficient numbers to make them fairly common today, this one is rather scarce. Perhaps the local peasantry did not revere his memory as reverently as they ought. A similar five mark (Dav-815) was minted for the occasion, also rare.
Recorded mintage: 50,000 + 500 proofs.
Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine silver, 28 mm diameter, lettered edge.
