Sincona sale 9, lot 4052

This specimen was lot 4052 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,783 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Altenburg, Herzogtum Ernst, 1853-1908. 5 Mark 1901. Zum 75. Geburtstag. Feinste Polierte Platte. (Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Ernest, 1853-1908, five mark of 1901, on his seventy-fifth birthday. Proof.)"

Altho most commemoratives were saved in sufficient numbers to make them fairly common today, this one is rather rare. Perhaps the local peasantry did not revere his memory as reverently as they ought. A similar two mark was minted for the occasion, also rare.

Recorded mintage: 20,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
