Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70721
SB1021-70721r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70721 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Oldenburg. 2 Mark, 1901-A. Berlin Mint. NGC AU-58. Very near Mint State, with some light handling relegating this piece to a borderline grade. Rather bright and lustrous, with attractive mottled magenta color that is most prominent on the reverse." This poor and windswept state on the North Sea had little call for coinage and the grand duke issued only token amounts. This type of 1900-01 is fairly common in circulated condition.

Recorded mintage: 75,000 + 260 proofs.

Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-202; J-94.
