This specimen was lot 31619 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas II gold 5 Roubles 1899-ФЗ MS65 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Head of Nicholas I left. Rev. Crowned double-headed eagle with date and value. Fully brilliant, and well struck, with a touch of greenish-gold patina and minor die striations. Scarce in this superior condition." This type was struck 1897-1911 in sufficient numbers as to be considered a bullion coin. At the time of issue, 8 French gold francs = 3 Russian gold rubles.
Recorded mintage: 20,400,000, including assayers ФЗ and ЗБ.
Specification: 4.30 g, 0.900 fine gold.
