Russia 1831 ruble rev Ponterio 173-1649.jpg

This specimen was lot 1649 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1831/0-CNB HT. PCGS AU-50. Open "2" on reverse. Toned." This type was struck 1826-31 in reasonable quantities but is today very rare in nice condition. The preceding type (Dav-281) is very similar but with a "wings up" eagle. In addition to the overdate shown here, the SCWC notes "closed 2" and "open 2" varieties for the reverse, with the open 2 given a substantial premium.

Recorded mintage: 3,670,000.

Specification: 20.73 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Bitkin 111, KM C161, Dav-282.
