Russia 1764 ruble rev H3032-25803.jpg

This specimen was lot 25803 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "Catherine II Rouble 1764 CПБ-CA, St. Petersburg mint, MS62 NGC. Crowned bust right. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle with date and value. Fully struck, with lustrous surfaces beneath a touch of golden toning, and the surfaces are free of significant flaws. Rare in this condition." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued 1763-82, is fairly common but this date is rare. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 24 grams.

Recorded mintage: 3,016,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 24 g, 0.750 fine silver, .578 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Bitkin-275, Diakov-51, KM C67.2a, Dav-1683.
