Sincona sale 63, lot 1762

This specimen was lot 1762 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$627 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Catherine II. 1762-1796. Rouble 1764, Red Mint, MMD EI. 3 roubles according to Petrov. NGC XF Details. Slightly cleaned." This type, issued 1763-82, is fairly common. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 24 grams.

Recorded mintage: 264,000.

Specification: 24 g, 0.750 fine silver, .578 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM C67.1a, Bitkin 122, Dav-1683.
