This specimen was lot 54319 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $19,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1764-CNB. St. Petersburg Mint. Catherine II "the Great". NGC AU-58. Exceptionally radiant and flashy, and with just a slight degree of light wear across the highest points, this incredible survivor offers immense charm and appeal, and no doubt represents one of the finest of the date that one can hope to acquire. Indeed, NGC has graded just two superior. From the Rothschild-Piatigorsky Collection." This is the first year of the reduced weight five rubles, which was struck in this style 1764-65. Later varieties, tho not cheap, are much more available.
