Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 54314
SB124-54314 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 54314 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $90,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1762-CNB. St. Petersburg Mint. Peter III. NGC AU-58+. An undisputed RARITY that commands attention, this large gold denomination was issued during the very brief reign of Peter III and features surface quality that is as close to Mint State status as one can get. The strike is well centered and rather well executed, the color of the gold features some deeper orange hues around the devices, and the luster remains exceedingly radiant and impressive. It is extremely easy to see that the present example has fared far better than the man whose portrait it bears, as Peter reigned for just six months in 1762, with his marriage to future tsarina, Catherine II "the Great", always being tenuous at best. His decided unpopularity and her overt ambitions have ceaselessly fueled the belief that she was behind his murder, though direct links have remained unclear. From the Rothschild-Piatigorsky Collection." The SCWC lists a ducat for Peter III (KM C51) and a rare five rubles for Catherine II (KM C78.2) but no five rubles for Peter III. The few that were made were likely targeted for minting when the weight was reduced in 1764.

Recorded mintage: 9,482 (probably including some ten rubles).

Specification: 8.27 g, 0.917 fine gold.
