Russia 1762-SP 10 rubles Fr-129
This specimen was lot 33285 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $120,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia: Mint State Catherine II 10 Roubles. Catherine II gold 10 Roubles 1762-CПБ MS61 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Crowned and draped bust right. Rev. Cross of four crowned shields with date in the angles. A fleeting large gold issue of Catherine II we've had the pleasure of handling every few years, but none so fine. Displaying not a hint of striking weakness, the prominently featured bust, seen with impressive depth, sits atop a warm honeyed-gold planchet revealing scattered wisps while the legends are lit aglow upon illumination. The reverse is even finer than the assigned grade would indicate, with notable Prooflike appearances, deep mirrors, ample die polish, and razor-sharp motifs projecting towards the viewer. Sure to garner interest from quality-minded collectors, as this piece finds itself tied for the finest with two others between both major grading services." Ten rubles were also struck for her sadly deceased husband, Peter III. This denomination was lowered in weight to 13.59 g in 1764, likely causing many of the earlier issues to be melted.
Recorded mintage: 9,462 including KM C50 (Peter III).
Specification: 16.57 g, 0.917 fine gold.
