This specimen was lot 4297 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $734.38. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 1/2 Ruble, 1762-CNBHK. NGC Fine Details--Environmental Damage. Grainy surfaces due to light corrosion." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued from Moscow and St. Petersburg 1762 only, is rare. The reign of Peter III was cut short when the mentally unstable emperor was murdered by officers of the czarist army. His German wife succeeded, becoming Catherine the Great. The poltinas of Peter II were about 14.22 grams but this type seems to be only 12 grams.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 12 g, 0.750 fine silver, .289 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM C-46.2; Bit-13.
