Künker sale 386, lot 3866

This specimen was lot 3866 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,197 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Katharina II. 1762-1796. 5 Rubel 1765, St. Petersburg. GOLD. R Henkelspur, schön-sehr schön. (empire of Russia, Catherine II, 1762-96, five rubles of 1765, St. Petersburg mint. Rare, mount mark, fine to very fine.)"

Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. This five rubles, tho less rare than those of Elizabeth, is still plenty expensive. It is listed for 1764-65.
