Sincona sale 19, lot 263

This specimen was lot 263 in Sincona sale 19 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 425 (about US$533 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "20 Kopecks 1765, Red Mint. Very fine." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. This twenty kopeks, issued 1764-65 from Moscow and St. Petersburg, introduced the denomination.

Recorded mintage: 520,000 plus 115,000 from St. Petersburg.

Specification: 4.77 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 4.84 g.
