This specimen was lot 3326 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1764-CNB RI. Catherine II (The Great) (1762-96). NGC MS-61. Wonderful strike giving considerably more detail in finer areas like the ermine cloak than is commonly encountered. Full glittering luster throughout with a hint of mild luster at periphery and over tops of devices. Very attractive and worthy of its mint state status." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued 1763-82, is fairly common. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 24 grams.

Recorded mintage: 3,016,000 (including assayer CA).

Specification: 24 g, 0.750 fine silver, .578 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM C-67.2a; Bit-185; Dia-50, Dav-1683.
