Russia 1757 ruble Fr-116
This specimen was lot 54310 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Gold Ruble, 1757/6. Moscow (Red) Mint. Elizabeth. NGC AU Details--Spot Removed. Some marks are noted on the reverse, near the left edge and between the right head and wing, but this smaller gold denomination nevertheless stands as a charming representative with pleasing toning. From the Rothschild-Piatigorsky Collection." This gold ruble was issued 1756-58 and does not seem to have been a success, as the denomination was not issued again in gold until 1779. It was accompanied by a gold half (Fr-118) and two rubles (Fr-115). All the known specimens seem to be the overdate.
Recorded mintage: 14,000.
Specification: 1.62 g, 0.917 fine gold.
