Livonia 1757 4 kopeks
This specimen was lot 5069 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €120 (about US$162 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Elisabeth, 1741-1761. 4 Kopeken 1757, Moskau, Roter Münzhof, geprägt für Livland und Estland. Sehr schön. (empire of Russia, Elizabeth, 1741-61, four kopeks of 1757, Moscow, Red mint, struck for Livonia and Estonai. Very fine.)"
This coin was issued by the tsarina for the recently occupied province of Livonia, now part of Latvia. The region was conquered from pagan tribes by the Teutonic Knights and after their collapse, traded among Poland, Sweden and Russia, which held it 1721-1918. This denomination was accompanied by two, 24, 48 and 96 kopeks.
