Livonia in 1740, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1125 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIAN LIVONIA: Elizabeth, 1741-1762, AR 2 kopecks, 1757, 1/48 livonese, infrequently seen, especially in high grade, PCGS graded EF45, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This coin was issued by the tsarina for the recently occupied province of Livonia, now part of Latvia. The region was conquered from pagan tribes by the Teutonic Knights and after their collapse, traded among Poland, Sweden and Russia, which held it 1721-1918. This denomination was accompanied by four, 24, 48 and 96 kopeks.
