Livonia in 1740, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 259 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,199 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Elizabeth, 1741-1761, 48 Kopecks 1757, Red Mint. Mintage for the Baltic Area, Livland and Estonia. 5 roubles according to Petrov. 3 roubles according to Ilyin. Very fine." This coin was issued by the tsarina for the recently occupied province of Livonia, now part of Latvia. The region was conquered from pagan tribes by the Teutonic Knights and after their collapse, traded among Poland, Sweden and Russia, which held it 1721-1918. This denomination was accompanied by two, four, 24 and 96 kopeks and was minted in Moscow.
