Russia 1756 5 rubles Fr-124
The first specimen was lot 21303 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $31,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Exceptionally Flashy Elizabeth 5 Rubles. RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1756. Elizabeth. NGC AU Details--Reverse Tooled. A RARE type that is instantly impressive upon viewing with intricate detail through the designs and remarkable flash that creates exceptional eye-appeal. Unfortunately, more concentrated inspection reveals a set of short, inconspicuous scratches that, while avoiding the designs, mar the fields immediately surround the '1' in the date. If not for these, this coin would certainly be among the most impressive extant. As such, a coin that deserves careful consideration, as far less beautiful examples without the noted flaws would likely command far greater prices in today's market." The second specimen was lot 1072 in Sincona sale 93 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 9,500 CHF (about US$13,167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RUSSLAND Kaiserreich und Föderation, Elizabeth, 1741-1761, 5 Roubles 1756, Red Mint. 30 roubles according to Petrov. 25 roubles according to Ilyin. NGC XF Details. Kratzer, Scratches."
This type is listed for 1755-59; all dates are rare. Oddly, the accompanying ten rubles has the Moscow mintmark but the five rubles shown here does not.
Recorded mintage: 13,000.
Specification: 6.27 g, 0.917 fine gold, the second specimen 8.15 g.
