Russia 1759-SP 5 rubles Fr-124
This specimen was lot 31292 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $108,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia. Elizabeth gold 5 Roubles 1759-CПБ AU58 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Likely one of the most challenging dates in this only 5-year 5 Roubles series, and a remarkable rarity by all measures--according to our research, only about 8 examples have appeared at auction in the last 92 years. To date the sole certified representative, the present offering appears fully in-line with the nearly Mint State grade awarded by NGC, light cabinet rub visible over the surfaces with other evidence of circulation exceedingly mild. Close examination under magnification reveals evidence of die polish close to Elizabeth's bust, a feature that couples with a sound strike to suggest a superb quality of production. Struck from the same reverse die as the Fuchs and ex. Hutten-Czapski, Baronova examples, we note that only one specimen has become available outside of Russia in the last three decades, suggesting that collectors will not be likely to encounter another selection anytime soon. Sold with the original lot tag from the Goodman collection. Ex. Irving Goodman Collection (Superior February 1991, Lot 18); Moreira Collection (Superior December 1988, Lot 1229)." This type is listed for 1755-59; all dates are rare.
