Prussia 1861-A 1/6 thaler
This specimen was lot 4164 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €120 (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. 1/6 Taler 1861, A. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben im August 1971. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, one sixth thaler of 1861, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1861-64 and is rather common. The one-sixth thaler was one of many minor denominations struck alongside the better known thalers and gold coins. It was issued steadily 1809-68, when the unification of 1871 rendered it obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 249,000, rather common.
Specification: 5.35 g, 0.531 fine silver, this specimen 5.34 g.
Catalog reference: KM 487, AKS 100; J. 91; Olding 409.
