The first specimen was lot 1139 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$184 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Brandenburg / Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Vereinstaler 1861, Berlin. Sterbetaler. Gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, union thaler of 1861, Berlin mint. Good extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 4121 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €280 (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Vereinstaler 1861, A, auf seinen Tod. Prägung nach dem Wiener Münzvertrag von 1857. Fast Stempelglanz. Das vorliegende Stück wurde nach seinem Tod am 2. Januar 1861 von seinem Bruder, Kaiser Wilhelm I. in Auftrag gegeben. (Frederick William IV, 1840-61, union thaler of 1861, on his death. Struck according to the Vienna Coinage Treaty of 1857. About uncirculated. This piece was struck after the king's death on January 2 by his brother, emperor William I, in his memory.)"

This type is noted for 1857-61 and is common.

Recorded mintage: 10,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, the first specimen 18.49 g, the second specimen 18,50 g.
