Sincona sale 4, lot 4335

This specimen was lot 4335 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Brandenburg-Preussen, 1701 Königreich Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Taler 1854. Gutes vorzüglich. (Kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, thaler of 1854, good extremely fine)."

This type is noted for 1853-56 and is common. In 1857, the thaler was reformed into the vereinsthaler; the weight was lowered but the fineness increased, resulting in a smaller coin with the same amount of silver. The vereinsthaler standard was used until the decimal reform of 1871.

Recorded mintage: 3,500,000.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 22,28 g.

Catalog reference: Kahnt 377, Thun 260, Dav-773, KM 465.
