Künker sale 336, lot 6517

This specimen was lot 6517 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,664 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Doppelter Friedrichs d'or 1852, A. GOLD. Attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, double frederick d'or of 1852. Attractive example, extremely fine.)"

This denomination was introduced as a doppelter wilhelm d'or in 1737 during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm I (r. 1713-40) but continued as a doppelter friedrichs d'or during the rule of Frederick the Great (r. 1740-86). This type was issued 1841-52. The denomination, worth ten thaler, was retired in 1855.
