Künker sale 264, lot 3641

This specimen was lot 3641 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,100 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Friedrichs d'or 1853, A. GOLD. Attraktives Exemplar, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, frederick d'or of 1853. Attractive very fine to extremely fine.)"

The last friedrichs d'or was struck in 1855 (KM 469, shown here) and was replaced by the gold half krone (KM 493, struck 1861-69), which contained about 70/83 of the gold in the previous denomination. The gold krone was in turn superseded by the gold twenty mark of the German Empire. This scarce issue is listed for 1853-55.
