Künker sale 353, lot 3699

This specimen was lot 3699 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €80 (about US$111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 2 Stüber 1772, A, Berlin. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. RR Sehr schön. Erworben am 27.10.1985 von Udo Gans, Arnsberg. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, two stuivers of 1772, Berlin mint, struck for the western provinces. Very rare, very fine.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC under East Friesland but it may also have circulated in Prussia's other western territories, such as Cleve, Mark, Ravenburg and Minden. The Aurich mint seems to have closed about 1768 and the Berlin mint took over its duties of providing coinage for the province. This type is listed for 1772-75 and is rather scarce. A one stuber and half stuber were also struck in 1772.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen is 1,46 g.

Catalog reference: KM 248 (listed under East Friesland), Olding 267; Kluge 276.1.
