Sincona sale 78, lot 476

This specimen was lot 476 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,050 CHF (about US$1,259 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Nicholas I. 1825-1855, 15 Kopecks - 1 Zloty 1839, Warsaw Mint, MW. Rare in this condition. NGC MS63 PL." Despite Russian promises of autonomy, the czar found the Poles to be the most obstreperous of all his subjects. Major rebellions occurred in 1831 and 1863. This type is listed for 1832-41 and has two denominations, one złoty or fifteen kopeks. One złoty was thirty groszy. Some come with assayer's initials ΗГ; these were struck in St. Petersburg.
