This specimen was lot 33889 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,080. The lot description[1] noted, "Poland: Nicholas I of Russia gold 20 Zlotych (3 Roubles) 1839 CЛБ-AY/MW AU53 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. A rarely witnessed date, firmly produced on a pale gold planchet and exhibiting a distinguished degree of preservation to obverse fields." Despite Russian promises of autonomy, the czar found the Poles to be the most obstreperous of all his subjects. Major rebellions occurred in 1831 and 1863. The SCWC lists this type for 1834-40. The mintmaster listed for 1839 is "ПД" but the SCWC's photo of the coin shows "АЧ", the same as here. Twenty złotych equaled three rubles. Russian coinage for Poland ended in 1850.

Recorded mintage: 10,706.

Specification: 3.89 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM-C136.2, Bit-1080 (R).
