Sincona sale 78, lot 471

This specimen was lot 471 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,798 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Nicholas I. 1825-1855, 3 Roubles - 20 Zlotych 1837, St. Petersburg Mint, SPB PD. Mintage for Poland. Very fine. Usual die flaws and some scratches." Despite Russian promises of autonomy, the czar found the Poles to be the most obstreperous of all his subjects. Major rebellions occurred in 1831 and 1863. This issue was struck 1834-39 in St. Petersburg. Twenty złotych equaled three rubles. Russian coinage for Poland ended in 1850. The initials ПД are for mintmaster Paul Danilov.
