Sincona sale 78, lot 474

This specimen was lot 474 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$5,393 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Nicholas I. 1825-1855, 3 Grosze 1838, Warsaw Mint, MW. Rare in this condition. NGC MS65+ BN." Despite Russian promises of autonomy, the czar found the Poles to be the most obstreperous of all his subjects. Major rebellions occurred in 1831 and 1863. This type is listed for 1835-39 and is very moderately priced in circulated condition. One złoty was thirty groszy.
