The currency of the Philippines, which was called pesos and centavos during the American colonial period, was reformed in 1969 and renamed "piso" and "sentimo" which were the Tagalog translations. Locals, however, continue to use the old names. This type was struck 1975-82 and demonetized in 1998. The obverse bust is of José Rizal, martyr of the struggle for independence.
Recorded mintage: 30,000,000 minted by the Franklin Mint and 10,000,000 minted in Werdohl, Germany plus 146,877 proofs (mintmark FM).
