Künker sale 424, lot 531

This specimen was lot 531 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$15,576 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Christoph Bernhard von Galen, 1650-1678. 1/2 Reichsgulden 1678, Münster. Mit der Jahreszahl auf Vorder- und Rückseite. Gekröntes und verziertes, achtfeldiges Wappen (Corvey, Münster, Stromberg / Borkelo - Corvey / Stromberg, Münster, Borkelo) mit dem Familienwappen von Galen als Mittelschild, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt//1/Z / REICHS / GVLDEN / VIII SCHIL / IIII PFENNI / MVNST / I678, umher Lorbeerkranz, oben die Signatur I - L (Johann Longerich, Münzmeister in Münster 1664-1680), unten 3 / EIN RHR. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Schöne Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung Alfons Buller, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 1, Osnabrück 1985, Nr. 936 und der Slg. Dieter Braun, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 249, Osnabrück 2014, Nr. 1737. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen, 1650-1678, half gulden of 1678, Münster mint, with the date on both sides. Obverse: crowned eightfold arms of Corvey, Münster, Stromberg and Borkelo with the escutcheon of Galen over crossed crozier and sword; reverse: value in laurel wreath, date below. Very scarce in this quality, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The SCWC lists an eighth thaler (KM 90), a quarter gulden (KM 86) and a one gulden (KM 87) for 1678 but not this half gulden. Under von Galen's energetic administration, Münster began to recover from the devastation of the Thirty Years War.
