Munster 1678 thaler Dav-5605
This specimen was lot 2263 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Münster, Bistum, Christoph Bernhard von Galen, 1650-1678 Taler 1678. Auf seinen Tod. Sehr schön. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler am Rand. (bishopric of Munster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen, 1650-1678, thaler of 1678, issued on the occasion of his death. Very fine, Minor planchet defect at the edge.)"
All the thalers of Münster are scarce. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church.
