This specimen was lot 532 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$33,984 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Christoph Bernhard von Galen, 1650-1678. 3 Dukaten o. J. (1678), Münster, auf seinen Tod am 19. September in Ahaus. CHRIST : BERN : D : G · EPIS et PRINCEPS · MONAS · Fünffach behelmtes und verziertes, achtfeldiges Wappen (Corvey, Münster, Stromberg / Borkelo - Corvey / Stromberg, Münster, Borkelo) mit dem Familienwappen von Galen als Mittelschild, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt//S · CAROLVS · MAGNVS · FVNDATOR Geharnischtes Hüftbild Karls des Großen r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, in der Linken Reichsapfel. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 75, Osnabrück 2002, Nr. 1826. Aus einer von Gerd Dethlefs (Westfälische Quellen im Bild 21, Beilage zu: Archivpflege in Westfalen und Lippe 27, 1987) publizierten Rechnung des münsterischen Goldschmieds Gottfried Storp an die Testamentsvollstrecker (Exekutoren) des verstorbenen Bischofs Christoph Bernhard von Galen geht hervor, daß die Prägung dieses herrlichen, extrem seltenen Dreidukatenstückes vom Bischof vor seinem Tode in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Es wurde in nur 34 Exemplaren hergestellt und bei der Totenfeier an 22 Hof- und Stadträte, acht Exekutoren, zwei Pagen, den Leibarzt sowie den Hofkaplan verteilt. Auf der Rückseite ist der Bistumsgründer Karl der Große zu sehen, mit dem sich der Kirchenfürst auf diese Weise in Beziehung setzte. Der Goldschmied beendete seine Rechnung mit dem Hinweis: "...bitte underdenigst mir selbige abzubezalen weilen ich das geldt so notig hab das es nit zu glauben." (An invoice published by Gerd Dethlefs (Westfälische Quellen im Bild 21, supplement to: Archivpflege in Westfalen und Lippe 27, 1987) from the Münster goldsmith Gottfried Storp to the executors of the will of the late Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen reveals that the minting of this magnificent, extremely rare three-ducat piece was commissioned by the bishop before his death. Only 34 copies were produced and distributed at the funeral service to 22 court and city councilors, eight executors, two pages, the personal physician, and the court chaplain. The reverse depicts the diocese's founder, Charlemagne, with whom the prince of the church established a relationship in this way. The goldsmith concluded his invoice with the note: "...please, under no circumstances, [forget to] pay me the same, because I need the money so much that it's hard to believe.")"
Under von Galen's energetic administration, Münster began to recover from the devastation of the Thirty Years War. This commemorative of his death was accompanied by a thaler (Dav-5605) and a goldgulden (Fr-1776).
