This specimen was lot 72387 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "Very Rare Error with Reversed Mintmaster's Initials. MEXICO. Peso, 1903-Mo MA. Mexico City Mint. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. A VERY RARE and extremely desirable error, this variant features the mintmaster's initials--normally encountered as "AM"--appearing mistakenly as "MA." Despite the noted cleaning, this example should undoubtedly generate great enthusiasm for the specialist looking to add the type to their collection, as appearances at auction are extremely limited." This type was struck 1898-1905 and 1908-09 at the four mints still open: Mexico City (shown here), Guanajuato (until 1900), Zacatecas and Culiacan. Most dates are common but this error is rare.

Recorded mintage: 22,396,000 (including the correct assayer AM).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-409.2.
